Deletion of threads

Deletion of threads

Is there a method (or future plans) for a teacher to delete a thread ? I know you can delete individual entries in Moodle, but this can sometimes be tedious if the thread contains many many posts.

I think it would make sense to change things so that instead of a warning about not being able to delete a post with replies, that teachers get a warning like "you are about to delete a post with replies attached to it" - if they say yes then ALL are deleted.

I guess it's obvious, but just in case:

If a user is not a teacher, he will still get the warning about not being able to delete a post with replies.
Am I correct?

Yes, definitely - it wouldn't make sense for students to be able to delete other people's replies.

Is this a change that's easy to make, code-wise? I can not find a preference for this now, but would be a great feature to make available to our teachers.

Has the proposed teacher-only ability to delete posts with replies been added yet? This is a feature that is really needed, as a few of the Grade 8 students using our school's Moodle occasionally get carried away with threads that quickly accumulate large quantities of inappropriate content. Deleting such a thread one post at a time quickly becomes rather tedious (not to mention time-consuming).

No, it hasn't. But I submitted it as bug 1938 a couple months ago. You can add your vote for it there.

I would also really like to see this feature implemented, so went to vote but when i clicked it told me I had already voted...  but my name isn't on the list of people who have voted.

I think I came across this behaviour when I thought I was logged into the bug tracker but wasn't.

Reading through some previous discussion threads, there appears to be a simple way to delete an entire thread.

1) Split the offending branch so that it becomes its own thread.

2) Create a temporary forum called 'Garbage collection'.

3) Move the unwanted thread from its current forum to 'Garbage collection'.

4) Delete the 'Garbage collection' forum.

I tried this out, and it seems to work just fine.

Good tip Steve. I ran into this exact problem in class tonight when I was using a forum for student practice. Once the practice was over, I simply wanted to delete the thread, but found I couldn't without first deleting every reply. I ended up deleting the forum. Spliting a thread into a garbage forum is a good workaround.

I can imagine there would be a time when a teacher may want to keep a discussion thread, but simply delete the contents of a inappropraite post in the thread. It would be nice if the teacher could simply open a post and delete the offending text from a given post.

This is a much needed piece of functionality. As mentioned by a previous poster students can easily digress into unsuitable discussions!

When are we likely to see this being added?

Cheers,
Dave

This is done in CVS for Moodle 1.5.  Teachers can now delete whole branches at once - they are first given a warning and a preview of all the posts they are about to delete.
