Moodle on Windows Server Environment?

Moodle on Windows Server Environment?

Good day all;

I am not a server guru, so I'm not sure how to approach this (or if it is even possible).

I am a middle school teacher who has installed Moodle on my personal web site (http://www.gis4u.com/moodle/).  I am using Moodle to teach 7th graders about Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Unfortunately, even with 1 GB of space,  and 65 GB of transfer each month, I foreseen a problem with the amount of data that is being accessed from my site.  My goal would be to "sell" the school district administration on the idea of installing Moodle on a school district server.  The problem, we live in a Windows Server environment.

I had been told in the past, by district MIS personnel, that using a PHP system on the existing server would not be possible.  Is this really the case?  They have lied to me in the past and I want to confirm it with people I trust (the Moodle Community).  If it is possible, could you please share with me the required steps to make it happen?  I need "ammunition" to attack this issue.

Thank you in advance for your input and to all that have made Moodle possible!!

As Martin has said, it is technically possible, indeed a lot of moodlers are using the Windows platform. The problem however may be that your MIS people don't *want* to install PHP.

Or of course it might just be technical incompetence smile

I vote for technical incompetence wink

I have experienced SOOOOO many issues with people in the MIS Department that say things "CAN'T" be done.  When in actuality it more like they don't want to do it!!  I believe myself to be an innovator, and I HATE it when someone says something can't be done!!

There is almost always a way to do something better!! Moodle is a prime example!!

Have a great day!

Well, I come from a background in what traditionally would have been called "MIS" but I've always believed in pushing the envelope wherever possible, rather than staying with a nice warm and fluffy "we've always done it this way" mentality.

Us MIS types are not all the same!  wink

Good point Marc

IMHO there are only tree limitations of wat "can be done": knowledge, time and money. goedkeurend

I use Easyphp on my laptopcomputer to make the Dutch translation. Installed in no time and runs like a charm.

Since I use a server with Apache (for F-secure) and IIS (for the website) on the same machine, I wouldn't know why it is impossible to put a moodle aside. Go for it.knipoog

As others have said, absolutely no reason it can't run on a windows machine. I run Apache on my Windows Server 2000 machine and it happily copes with over 2000 users (around 100 concurrently).

Thank you all for your input!!

I, too, am someone who prefers to push the envelope and was pretty sure this was possible.  I have forwarded Martin's link to one of the few people I trust in MIS (she's the webmaster for the district) to see what she thinks.

I am sure that I will have a fight on my hands.  They are already balking at my distribution of OpenOffice via my school's web site (http://www.clayton.k12.ga.us/lovejoymiddle/).  Another instance where the "we've always done it this way syndrome" is pounding it's fist.

Have an awesome day everyone!!

I had precisely the same reaction from my MIS department when I proposed Moodle for the training intranet.  "No way are we installing PHP and MySQL on our intranet server".

When I proposed an extra server if they felt that way, they didn't want to know about it until (it'll be too expensive) until I suggested a Linux server.  That changed opinions of a second server PDQ.  smile

I'm quite aware that not everyone is cursed with an MIS deparment such as ours.  However, there are ways to get around it.  I now have a server that the call centre can run it's own oddball server applications that MIS don't like.  Moodle runs just fine on a Windows 2000 Server/IIS/PHP/MySQL base.
