I make sure the GIFT file is set to use UTF-8 encoding. Then I copy the special characters I need from Windows Character Map app and paste them into the GIFT file. The biggest challenge I have is locating the character I want in the Character Map app - especially when I want to use a Greek character like π. I also use character map for accented characters, subscripts, superscripts and some fractions.

The main thing is to use UTF-8 encoding for the GIFT file.
