Replacing url in database after move to new hosting site

Replacing url in database after move to new hosting site

Hi,

I'm attempting to transfer my site to a new host. The original site was set up using the host site one step install process. I now have a need to transfer the site to another host. I've followed instructions from both hosts and via the moodle migration instructions located here https://docs.moodle.org/36/en/Moodle_migration

I have FTP access to the site but that's all.  After moving everything I am still having trouble accessing the site via browser.

the site was upgraded to 3.6.1 before I made any moves but I did put a fresh install of 3.6.1 in the new location. I don't know if that was bad decision or not.

One of the steps in the migration instructions refers to running a search and replace tool to find all the old site url and replace them with the new site url information.

I don't know how to run the file at {wwwroot}/admin/tool/replace/index.php which is what the instructions direct me to do to replace the database url information.

could someone help me with how to complete this step? I can't seem to run this file from ftp and I don't think I have any other tools or accesses that could run it.

Hi Randy

Have a look at this page https://docs.moodle.org/36/en/Search_and_replace_tool it describes how to run the search and replace tool from web browser.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for replying….  I did see that page but my inexperience with such things means I don’t actually know how to run that file. I can see it with an FTP tool but I don’t know how to run command line scripts. I don’t think I have that kind of access because it is on hosted site.

Randy, you need to login to your new Moodle site as an admin and then go to whateverthenewmoodlesitewebsddressis.com/admin/tool/replace/index.php and follow the instructions. You cannot run it directly  from ftp. You must be logged in as an admin to access that page.

When you say you’re having trouble accessing the site via the browser, what exactly do you mean? Is the web address working at all? Is anything showing? Are you getting a blank white screen? Are you seeing your site but not displaying as you expect? Are you seeing any error messages? We need some clues ;)

Hi Jon

The site is not operational. Right now all I get is a folder listing but can’t get into the folders. There is no log in. I may have things really messed up. I may just wipe it out and start over again.

Thanks

Hi Jon

Thanks. My problem is the new site will not start so I can’t log onto it. I was hoping that a possible reason for the site not working was due to wrong urls in the database.  If I need to be logged in to check I’ll need to look at other possible causes.

Thanks again for the help
