UKMoodlers in education Please Read This! - Frappr group...

Hi everyone - esp. if you're in the UK.

Please pass this on to other UK Moodlers and encourage them to make their mark if they can.

BETT last week was fantastic, Drew B and I had a really good discussion with Richard Millwood, the director of UltraLab. He was really helpful including suggesting setting up a Frappr group to give some idea of the use of Moodle in the UK - particularly useful in the coming year leading up to BETT 2007.

So (and apologies if I've missed out on something that's already there) I've set one up. If you add your information on there could you please reply to this thread so that people who aren't on Frappr can get an idea if this flies, crashes or... well, whatever. I'll tidy up the group a.s.a.p. - I have lots on at the moment!

There are custom tags for primary schools | secondary schools | FE colleges | HEIs | LEAs/RBCs - so please tag yourself appropriate. Please also ensure that you include your institution / school / organisation's name and a URL if you have one (I hope you have!)

Thanks for reading - please pass the URL on to fellow UK Moodlers - www.frappr.com/ukmoodlers - that would be lovely.

Ian.

Ian,

What a fantastic idea. I didn't even know about Frappr - I've  just started a DeMoodler group. Still trying to figure out how Frappr works, but I'm getting there. Will post it in the German forum hoping that other schools will join.
Wouldn't it be great, if other countries did the same, (Art, what about starting a USMoodlerMap?) then we'd have a world map of Moodlers.

Thanks for posting,

Ulrike

Of course, Frappr isn't UK specific - perhaps Ian would consider opening the terms of reference up to moodlers worldwide?

Re: UKMoodlers in education Please Read This! - Frappr group...

...in theory anyone could join, but I think in principle this (UK-specific) group would be a very useful tool to enable schools (and HE and FE institutions) to get a feel for what's going on in the UK. A Local Group For Local Moodlers, if you like. Particularly relevant for schools wondering, in the light of Standards Funding for Learning Platforms, if they are alone in considering Moodle...

However, it's easy to set up another group on Frappr - like a GlobalMoodlers group for example, and anyone who's "on" Frappr can be a member of many groups - like the EduBloggers group which Josie Fraser looks after... I joined this as a member before I started the UKMoodlers group.

Anyone fancy taking it on? wink

Ian,

Great to have a global Moodle frappr. I agree with you, I think it's a good idea to have a local, country specific frappr with detailed info about the schools - and those schools who want  to could join the World group - maybe with appropiate tags, so they could be found easily.  If one school is looking for contacts in another country, they could just enter the tags. (I really don't know this works - but I'm getting there) I'm still struggling with setting up the DeMoodler group for German Schools. (24 hours ago I didn't even know that something like frappr exits).
Please let me know which global group will be the default one, so I can pass on the info to the other schools in our area.

Ulrike

PS.  I should be grading papers now - midterm is around the corner, but frappr is more fascinating.

Nice idea, shame spoilt my entry by trying to put the url in the shout out - can't see how to edit it!

What occurred to me at BETT is that we have no reliable way to assess the true presence of Moodle in the UK (or anywhere else).

How could we run a survey to get a better idea?

Hi Andy, thanks for joining!

I've edited your shoutout, basically giving a URL starting with http:// is enough, so it's less slick than HTML but it does the job... please re-edit it to your satisfaction!

When I went to edit myself on the UKMoodlers in education Frapper I lost my status as a Secondary School - any ideas how I reset it?
In reply to Andrew Field

Re: UKMoodlers in education Please Read This! - Frappr group...

by Ian Usher -

Hi Andrew... I can edit that, just a few seconds

[pause]

actually, on your profile it was showing as a secondary school, so I just re-saved it... however Frappr is inconsistent, sometimes it shows all of the markers as pale red (i.e. not any of the UKMoodlers categories), other times only some are that pale red, other times everyone's their 'correct' colour.

Hope that's OK...

Ian.

Yes I noticed the weird colouring thing and assumed it was something I had done!

It sorted itself out after I edited the shoutout by clicking on the symbol itself rather than using the other box.

cheers

There is the definitive list of registered moodles, at  http://moodle.org/sites/index.php?country=GB
Now, with access to the location database underpinning this, it shouldn't be too difficult to use the Google Maps api to display the site name and URL on a clickable, zoomable map...

The Frappr thing is good too, because it's the people rather than the moodles.

Re: UKMoodlers in education Please Read This! - Frappr group...

...I agree, the list on the Moodle site is useful, since it gives an "all these institutions use Moodle" view which some people (at managerial level? thoughtful might respond to , but the Frappr thing puts faces to institutions and sits well (I think) with the way interaction happens on Moodle.org...

And now we've two global Moodle groups! Richard and Mark, you can sort it out between you! I'm sure everyone will join whichever one ends up being the default... smile

Re: UKMoodlers in education Please Read This! - Frappr group...

Talked to Mark and I'm going to do this.

The situation is that there are now 2 world moodle groups, it seems frappr created one for moodlers without any word from us and they have control over that sad.  I suggest its better if we all use the one I've created as I have admin rights over that one.  Ignore this one and I'll try and get it deleted so we all know where we are.

I've created the groups to be slightly different to UK moodlers, obviously our terms for the different levels of education vary around the world so I hope that's OK.  It can be changed in the future but that creates problems with people who've already entered themselves, they'll carry the old tag, so if you violently disagree, please do it now. thoughtful

Otherwise, please sign up!

Thanks for everyone's work - I have joined both groups.
Richard, as you are asking for comments from global moodlers on your tagging of education sector, I suggest you link this from your other (empty) thread about this.  After all, non Uk people probably won't read this (except Ulrike wink Hi!!).

What I meant was that if you put a message in your other topic at Richard's other topic, linking to this thread/topic then it would pick up those non_uk people who may be deterred by the title of this topic.

For example your message could say something like.

We have been discussing country-specific and global Frappr Groups in UKMoodlers in Education topic

so it's worth reading that topic if such groups interest you.

I probably haven't explained this very well wink

Actually, slow down, I've asked Frappr for admin access to http://www.frappr.com/moodle which would obviously be ideal.  I'll get back here when they get back to me.

Martin,

Mark got access to this group already, I thought worldmoodlers was possibly a better group than just moodlers as it differentiates from ukmoodlers and there's now 41 of us signed up.

Yeah, but this is the proper name and easier to find. wink There was no admin before for it, but I've got access now and it's wide open for anyone to join.

I've added it to this course as an Interactive map of Moodle users.

Feel free to use the other maps as well of course but make sure you get on this one!
