As we were debugging a different issue (discussed here https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=378935) my collegue demonstrated this in a test environment with two VMs.
- VM1 runs a fresh Windows Server 2012 R2. To its (fresh) AD two users were added.
- VM2 is a Linux server, with Moodle 3.1.15 and 3.5 freshly installed. Their ldap_auth is set to fetch the users from the same AD in VM1 with identical parameters, incl. the bind user.
When the scheduled task for auth_ldap was run (through the Moodle GUI) Moodle 3.5 does not pull the users. The display is:

Creating temporary table tmp_extuser
Did not get any users from LDAP -- error? -- exiting

Moodle 3.1.15 pulls the two users. Before spending more time on this, was there such an issue recently?

I am on 3.5 with no issues. Recheck your settings...I suspect a typo.
