restoring students work

I have relied on that I can restore deleted assignment with students assignments via recycle bin but it seems to delete them. Is there any way to restore those assignments easily without going to the server backups (that apparently is in our case taken once a week)?

Hi Anna,

You really need to provide much more information, about your Moodle version, and what you did exactly!

The more precise information, more chance to quickly find a (good) solution ; less information, no solution...

And if your students are no more enrolled in the course, you don't see there grades, even if they exists.

Hi Séverin, sorry for the lack of information!

We have 3.3 version and in a course some of a multiple teachers deleted an assignment activity that included dozens of files (.pdf and .docx) that students had submitted over a few weeks. The students are still in the course. We couldn't restore that activity from recycle bin since it had been deleted over a week ago (7 days is the default setting in Moodle) and actually we realized that even if you restore the activity before that 7 days has passed it deletes all submitted files from the activity immediately when you click delete. To test this we created a new assignment activity and submitted some files to it. Then we deleted it (edit -> delete, confirm: yes) and after that we clicked restore from the recycle bin: all files that were submitted vanished.

So my question is basically that is there any way to restore the submitted files in activities such as assignment if this happens? We managed to find some of the files from backups but there was a one week gap in backups since it had been over a week that the assignment had been deleted. I also tried to find settings regarding recycle bin or restoring files inside activities but didn't find any.

Hi Anna,

I'm not a specialist of recycle bin, nor backups ; sorry if i can't help much more.

Is your platform (where the problem occurs) well configured, with cron (and tasks) running regularly?

Perhaps you found a bug ; if it's the case, you'll definetly have to fill a tracker issue about that, with as much details as possible, and a link to/from this discussion.

Hi, and thanks for trying smile Our Moodle should be well configured and cron and tasks running regularly. I don't think that I'm the first person to realize this but I really think that restoring an activity should also restore everything inside the activity. Whats the purpose of restoring an activity from recycle bin if you can also just create another one and start with a zero?

Hi,

We have the same problem. A teacher deleted a quiz and when we restored the activity it does not restore the attempt and either the grades.

I agree with Anna. It does not have any sense to me.

Regards

Hi, I actually found (and forgot to post my findings...) that backup/restore-settings effects on these. Like if you have selected "include users" or "anonymise information" that effects to courses that you are backing up but also the settings of trash. It took me a while to realize this because I had assumed that backing up courses or restore settings will only effect on backing up courses or restoring them...

Hi,

I think you should definetly create a tracker issue (if none already exists) about this problem, with most details as possible, and a complete way (step by step, with settings) to see the problem.

And then, indicate the link to the issue, so that everybody can vote/comment on it.

In my opinion, backup settings shouldn't have influence on the recycle bin, and recycle bin should always allow to recover everything that was existing, despite the backup settings.

I only know that I can retrieve deleted files from the empty recycle bin, but I don't know if these methods work for Moodle. This can be done using Windows Backup File History and Restore Previous Versions. If you are interested, choose the right method and give it a try.

Hi,

Just to note MDL-63263 is now resolved, so begining with Moodle 3.5.6 or 3.6.4 (or 3.5.x or 3.6.x versions from this week), recycle bin backups will always include users data.

An upgrade will be necessary to benefit of it.

HTH,
