Text to Speech plugin?

Text to Speech plugin?

Hi there! I'm in need of help. I'm looking for a Text-to-Speech plugin.

I thought I had found my answer in Oohoo but apparently it hasn't been updated in 4 years and only works with earlier moodle versions. We're running 3.4 I believe.

Many of our learner are low level readers so a text-to-speech plugin would be very helpful.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Stephanie,

I once saw a demonstration of ReadSpeaker at a MoodleMoot. It looked pretty good!

https://www.readspeaker.com/learning/moodle/

Might be less expensive than trying to develop your own solution using Google's brand new Cloud Text-to-Speech (announced a couple of days ago) which is another option:

https://cloud.google.com/text-to-speech/

It is hot news for anyone interested in developing it for Moodle.

If you are a non-profit, you might also check out ResponsiveVoice.JS:

https://responsivevoice.org

Do you need something that will read your whole page or just a part of it - language learning for example?

Hope you find something in this useful.

Best regards,

Michael Milette

I recommend Poodll. That way you can keep everything in Moodle without having to jump to other platforms. I'm pretty sure Poodll offers free trials, and there are a lot of support documents, videos etc. My university has been using it for a few years now...

Thanks for sharing Emma! I did not know that.

If anyone is interested, you can try it out without installing it by going to https://plugins.moodlebites.com/course/view.php?id=51

To use it, select text you want to hear and click the speaker in the toolbar near the top of the page.

Interesting. The first line on that page you link to, points out that you need to know the "language" the page was written in. The word, customise, is pronounced correctly when using en-GB, but not with the two en-US voices. All three sample voices handle, customisations, ok. smile

Seems that if I link directly to the course, you are prompted to login. This is not necessary. Just go to https://plugins.moodlebites.com/ and click on the Accessibility Block course. Alternatively, you can select it from the Blocks drop down menu near the top of the page.

Sorry for any confusion.
