What plugins are you thinking of? Are you confusing plugins with blocks? (OK, blocks are also plugins, but they are specifically named blocks to differentiate from other forms of plugins.) Some blocks you can configure to appear on the right or left. I don't think there are any plugins that appear in block form.... I might be wrong, but I don't know of any, (except for things like Course Contents but isn't that really a block?).
