When you say "private messaging" do you mean like in this documentation on Messaging? You can access it from the speech bubble icon to the left of your profile pic towards the top of this site.
As for Moodle scaling, some of the world's biggest universities use Moodle with thousands of users. We run a twice yearly Learn Moodle MOOC with several thousand users and hundreds of courses, and no problems.
