I want to set up what I call short answer assessment activities in MoodleCloud ie student is given a question which they answer directly into a text box in Moodle. The answer may be up to 3 or 4 sentences long which I want teachers to be able to manually grade.

From my searching the forums, it seems that the default short answer question type  in Moodle (using either Assignment (online) or Quiz) is designed for very short answers which can be pattern-matched with or without using a wildcard character.

Are there any options that I have missed that will allow me to use the type of assessment activity I describe above?

I have kept searching and found "essay question type" within "quiz". 

Is this my best option? Are there others that I have missed?

Hi Marilyn,

I think you can also use CLOZE type questions for for short answer type questions. Not sure about how many characters you can use.

The cloze is also designed for automatic grading.  You want to use the essay question.
