Moodle became very slow after 5 months of decent speed

We are using one of the Moodle vendors recommended on Moodle site. Suddenly, after using Moodle for 5 months with a pretty normal speed, about 2 weeks ago, the system became extremely slow and everybody registered on the site is complaining.

Our people evaluating the system are not happy at all about the speed. All people accessing the site, no matter where they are in the world, insist that they cannot use the system and are asking for us not to use Moodle anymore.

The vendor says that everything is normal in his site, but he is suggesting for us to get a dedicated server for a much higher fee, of course. Is this a typical situation with other vendors of Moodle?

If sharing a server with other people using the vendor services affects the speed of the service, should the vendor have told us about this from the begining?

Any kind of suggestions will be very appreciated.

If the number of users using the system has dramatically increased from the time when you were enjoying good performance, then it is expected server behavior, depending on the number of users you have.

Is this vendor a Moodle partner or a dedicated Moodle hosting service or a general purpose webhost? Folks who specialize in Moodle can probably provide an interim solution between a shared host which may have hundreds of websites and a dedicated server.

In any event, once your LMS has a few hundred regular users you are most likely going to need a dedicated server to run a Learning Mangement System of any sort.

Get some price quotes from Blackboard or other LMS vendor and I think you will see that a dedicated server or a server with just a few sites from a Moodle partner/specialist would be a bargain.

Is 400 users a lot of users? And most of them have never logged in!

However the few that access the site because they need desperately to have their courses online for many good and non-profit reasons are all complaining about the slow speed of the site.

The truth is that we cannot afford to pay for a dedicated server.

It's hard to give suggest a lot of specifics without knowing specifics, but suggesting that you need a dedicated server if you are running an active site is reasonable. Not only would you need a dedicated server, but you would need a "good" dedicated server...lots of RAM and fast drives.

I noticed in a previous post that you talked about needing your entire site, not just the login page, to be connecting through https...I'm not an expert in this area, but it's my understanding that this could cause some serious performance issues.
