You can create a category with a name that you want. You don't need to use "Miscellaneous". Good luck with it. Also, do you understand that once students log in they see the courses they are logged into? That is the default. Hence, if you don't want to put any courses on the front page, you can do that. However, after students log in, they will only see their own courses.
