(Renamed) Essential and Moodle Messages Error

(Renamed) Essential and Moodle Messages Error

Hi All,

Last week we started receiving emails from students where they informed us that they can no longer access the Moodle Messages even though they haven't deleted the messages themselves.

We have tested this ourselves as well, and noticed that while previously any read messages would still be available, now, once our end users read all messages, the "No messages were found" message is being displayed:

No messages were found

Even though the user actually has messages in his/her inbox:

Recent conversations

Kindly note that this was not the case until a few days ago. If users read all messages, the message "Unread messages (0)" would be displayed, as shown below, and all messages would still be easily accessible:

Unread messages

It might be that there was an update which I was unaware of, and I apologise in that case, but from our end, we didn't update or modify any of the settings in our VLE. If there were any changes, I hope these can be reverted because this is becoming quite a bit of an issue for our end users.

Thank you in advance.

Regards,
Naomi

Hello Naomi. The first thing I would suggest is that you check with your admin because your theme is not a standard Moodle theme, as far as I can tell. Perhaps you have recently upgraded to the latest version of Moodle  - 3.2 - which brought changes in messaging - and this has perhaps altered how messages are displayed in your theme?

Hi Mary,

Thank you for your prompt attention to the matter.

Kindly note that we have the Essential theme installed, and we have Moodle 3.1.1 (Build: 20160711).

Could it be that some changes in messaging due to the latest version of Moodle 3.2, effected previous versions as well please? As we received our first query from students on the 7th December.

Thanks again,
Naomi

Hello again. I have changed the title of your query to reflect the problem and I am going to move it to the Themes forum where hopefully you will get more specialised advice.

Hi,

I've renamed the post again as it states Moodle 3.1.1 and therefore would be misleading.  Ok, what version of Essential are you running?  As I've fixed something like this months ago.

Gareth

We are having this same issue in Adaptable (posted here): https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=344387#p1408507

Currently trying to get a workaround of putting a link out with the theme change in the URL but trying to get a back button to enforce default theme again when they leave the messages page.  Not figured that out yet!  Would be better if we can fix the actual issue though. Any advice on a fix would be appreciated!

Hi Rebecca,

I believe that I've fixed this in the Essential theme, so down to Fernando to rectify in Adaptable.

Kind regards,

Gareth
