Poodll upload

I've got poodll installed in my moodle site, I can record video in forums and assignments which is where I want to use the facility.  I can record and play back but when I try to upload nothing happens.  It says it's uploading but it's not doing anything.  What else do I need to do

In the past day students are reporting this same problem with audio recording.  When they playback the recording before uploading in an assignment, it is fine, but when they try to upload, it will spin for a while, then page flashes for a second and the file is gone.  They have reported it on Chrome, IE and Firefox.   The recording is up to 6 minutes long, and some students are on wireless, but even when on campus connected to the wireless network, which is pretty robust, the same problem occurs.  I can see that other students successfully uploaded recordings close to 5 minutes.   Site upload is at 800MB,  and it is 20 MB for file upload to the course, so that's not the problem   Any ideas or advice?.

What is your version of the PoodLL filter? And which recorder are you using? It sounds like the mp3 recorder. That is more suited to shorter recordings, and over 2 - 3 minutes is not so reliable.

On PoodLL3 it should work a bit better if you are using cloud recording.

Hi Justin,

The filter is v. 2.8.5 (build 2015121106).   I see there is a newer version available, but once the semester starts we don't like to mess with our Moodle setup unless absolutely necessary.  Would updating to 2.8.6 make a difference in performance?

No it would not make a difference. 2.8.6 fixed a bug with some html5 widgets licensing but not with recording or uploading.

Is there any common factor relating students whose recordings fail?

Some of the common problems are

i) check the permissions on /filter/poodll/poodllfilelib.php
They should be 644 or 664. Sometimes they get messed up when you upgrade. This would cause all mp3 recordings to fail.

ii) Try recording tiny small recordings, do they work?
If so, a) check your max upload size for the course you are using
b) check if suhosin is enabled on your php. This and apache mod_security can both interfere with the upload.

iii)
If you look in your browser console , there will probably be an error after a failed upload. You might find it on the "network" tab of the console, in the request to poodllfilelib.php
Seeing that error would help

Hi Justin,

I think it is the recording size in 1 case, which is 5-6 minutes.  In another assignment the instructor has set it to both file upload and online PoodLL - .mp3.  I seem to recall that in the past that caused problems.

Permissions are OK.

Small recordings are accepted.

Max upload size for course is 400MB, same for the assignments I checked.

No suhosin enabled.

I'll test the last suggestion when I can, but since this isn't occurring in an on campus lab, any error I can create here may not have the same cause as the students, who are usually on a wireless, off-campus.

What is your version of the PoodLL filter? And from what browser and operating system are you trying to do this?

Try to do the same thing over at https://demo.poodll.com. If you can do that there, then it is something about your set up from where you are recording.

Hi Justin

I am unable to use the demo - I tried yesterday and again today and it won't let me make an account - it gives me this message

Security Question An internal error occurred: 53D3A9618E648.A14F60C.F20F94E9

I installed poodll yesterday from moodle.org  I'm in chrome on a mac book pro with 10.10.5.

I just tried on windows 10 ie - the drawing facility works but with audio and video I just get the insert and cancel button in the popup and no recording screen.

I guess it's something in my set - where do I go looking

I see. First of all on the PoodLL demo site you do not need to make an account. There are 50 ready made accounts, and the user names and passwords are on the top page.

I am guessing that the screenshot with the video recorder was taken while using Google Chrome. All looked good there, and it said "uploaded successfully." After you pressed insert what was the problem?

With IE I think probably Flash is not enabled,  and IE can't do HTML5 recording. If this is the case,  you will need to enable Flash on the windows machine.
