Fitness Program Tracking (v3.1)

Fitness Program Tracking (v3.1)

Hello World!

I am very new to Moodle, but I am learning as fast as possible.  I'm asking for help determining if my ideas can be accomplished through Moodle, and I'm pretty sure I just need to get smarter on the workings of Moodle, because it sure seems like anything is possible!

I want to develop a comprehensive learning platform for students in a physical/health education course(s).  I want to achieve the following, please let me know if you have any suggestions or apps to download that might help accomplish these different goals:

1) Run/Walk Mileage part 1 - looking for a BLOCK that students could log their daily running mileage, for a 1-month challenge.  I would like for the students to be able to log their own mileage based on honor code, then have an area where the mileage is auto calculated.

2) Run/Walk Mileage part 2 - I would like a separate BLOCK that extracts the total miles from each student, and lists the top 5 to 10 students based on current total mileage, and it would be nice to always have this block update in real time, or at least every morning.

3) I would like to have a system of Badges and also use the "level up" app to show overall progress for all physical/health related modules within the framework, to include, but not limited to: 1 month running mileage, 1 month healthy home cooking challenge, 1 month squat challenge, 1 month pushup challenge, etc.

4) My idea behind using the badges and the "level up" was to somehow accomplish a rubric based on a point system, whereas students would all be participating in a 1-month running challenge, but they could also earn bonus points for that month by "unlocking" other challenges.  For instance, each day, you can log up to a max of 5 miles.  Each mile is worth one point, but if you achieve all 5 miles that day, you actually get one bonus point or 6 total points for that day of running.  Alongside the running, if a student cooks a healthy meal and posts a picture to moodle, they could then achieve an additional maximum two bonus points for that day, to be added to their running points.

5) I intend to use the "level up" block to show a student's overall progress within the world of health and fitness as it relates to all available course content within the main framework.  Students would have required courses, but there would also be additional courses that they could tackle that would raise their "XP" and make it more of a social interaction challenge between students.

6) Activity tracker idea - is there anything that can sync up with wearable fitness devices?  To show progress and encourage competition?

7) Administrative dashboard - Ultimately, it would be perfect to have all of these different moving parts to show up on one simple dashboard.  The first app I just found is the "configurable reports" app.  I haven't gotten smart on it yet, but will do so while I wait for a response.

Anything helps at this point.  Thanks for your time in advance fellow moodlers.  I look forward to contributing back once I lock all of this down.  I plan to upload the entire framework once I've built everything.  This could be useful for Kinesiology programs in college, as well as any other age.

Picture of Particularly helpful Moodlers

When one comes to a forum for the 'moodle faithful' one should expect responses that do favor Moodle over other especially if, in your description, you've referenced moodle terms .. like block ... and provided your vision of how it might work.

Yes, Moodle is flexible but it's not a rapid application development platform.   It could, however, act as a portal to something else that be a better might fit for what one is doing or wants to do.

Case in point ... these devices to which you refer can export data as .csv and would imagine the best app to use to 'crunch' that data contained therein would be a spreadsheet (even if DB functions and Spreadsheet functions now cross over).    You've already gotten responses that there are no core or plugins (blocks or otherwise) that are ready made for what you want to do.    Suggestions that hint at contracting or building them might be cost prohibitive ... and could be problematic to 'future proof' ... one would want to use something like you've described over a period of years without having to tweak code, etc.. and worry about updates/upgrades whacking what had been customized.

So in that light ... consider using Moodle as a 'portal' ... so to speak ... and something like Google Sheets for the crunching of numbers, etc.   Something that already exist might be easy to change to get desired results:

Moodle does have Google Docs repo but think for what you've described,  in Moodle one might need only URL's to shared Google docs that are restricted on the Google end.

Considering you might teach at a school that already has or might be moving to Google Apps for Education using Moodle in that fashion might be the easiest overall.    Much less difficult to change a URL than it is to change code.

So depending ... might want to investigate that route.

'spirit of sharing'. Ken
