Allow Parent/Mentor Role to View Course/Assignment Details

I need for parents to be able to not only see their child(ren)'s grades, but also be able to view assignment descriptions, submissions, due dates, course materials, etc. I setup the parent role according to https://docs.moodle.org/31/en/Parent_role but the parent users can still only see grade details. If they click on an assignment or course title, they are taken to a page stating that they can not enrol themselves in that course.

I have also tried the demo of the ned_mentor block, but it seems to have the same limitations.

Is this functionality possible to achieve?

I believe the only way this is possible is if you actually enrol the parents into the courses in question.

Thanks for your reply. Maybe our school is unique, but I would think this is a feature that many K-12 schools would like to have. I assume enrolling the parents in the classes will cause a lot of confusion. I am open to creative ideas if anyone has them.

Nathan, it is the logical step and would be a useful feature to allow parents to not only see their childs grades/profile but to also see the course content.

Enrolling the Parent/Mentor to the course does not allow the parent to see what their child achieved in a Quiz for example. I have tried this. The parent becomes just another user of the course with whatever role you give them.

Hi Nathan,

Did you ever get anywhere with this? I managed to give the parents access to the assignments which worked great until I realised that it would not give the due dates. Nor would it allow the parent to view the student calendar for upcoming deadlines.

With the release of 3.3 I thought I could give the parents access to the course overview but that was a dead end.

I am beginning to think that the old way round this is to allow the parents the ability to login as their child. 

This must be possible to do, I just wish that I knew the answer.

Hi,

This is a feature that I want to, allow for a different reason. I am looking for way to let teachers view a course as an individual student (as opposed to just the student role) so that they can see how students will see things like the difference between separate and visible groups. I used to use a few dummy accounts for this, but for technical and security reasons, we can not longer have fake accounts that we let faculty directly log in with. If I could let faculty "log in as" with the dummy account--or otherwise view info via the dummy account account perspective, that would be great.

Ideas anyone?????

You can change permissions for teachers. "Login as" changes to "allow." An instructor clicks on a real student in participants, then on login as and can view what that student views.

This activity is recorded in the student's logs as "Ben Reynolds logged in as Student's Name" to distinguish from what the real student is doing.

Thanks, but as I understand it, this would let the teacher log in as any account on the system. Is that understanding wrong?

I want to allow the instructor only to log into a few specific accounts--not all accounts on the system. This is much as parents would log in only as their children.

Not the entire system, but yes, for an entire course. The permission is set at the course level.
