Unable to set passing grade as completion requirement in 3.1? Only A (any) grade.

We have recently upgraded from 2.7 to 3.1

We have completion data set up in all our courses that all assignments have a particular grade to pass. This is set at the activity level and the completion data for the course is set to show those activities that are required to pass the course.

In 2.7, we could set the minimum grade to pass and an activity was not considered complete until this grade was achieved.

In 3.1, we can still set the passing grade in the Grade Book Settings. BUT, we cannot tell the activity that a PASSING grade is required. Moodle thinks any grade is ok to set that activity as complete (even if the passing grade is not met). So our course completion data is now saying that students have completed the course when in fact they have not as they do not have the right grade for an assignment.

The icons for pass/fail are working correctly. So moodle knows there is a minimum grade to change the icon, BUT it ignores it for completion data.

This is what moodle is expecting now or is this a bug? Does anyone else have the same issue? If this is what moodle is expecting, then it's a useless function for us and we now have no way but to manually check thousands of courses for passing. It seems ridiculous if the passing grade option is not there for completion data.

Further to this, the following seems to be happening (we have 2 attempts to get a passing grade set):-

Student submits and passes all work - course completion is triggered as complete - this is expected and correct.

Student submits all work, but assignment is reopened (after grading) for second attempt to receive passing grade (not yet a passing grade is assigned) - course completion is triggered as complete - this should not happen as the student has another attempt at an assessment. Course is not yet complete but moodle signals it is.

Student submits all work, but fails two attempts at an assignment (as per our activity settings, 2 attempts allowed) - course completion is triggered as complete - this is expected and correct. The student has no more attempts so the course is complete (albeit failed).

So it seems that this might be a bug? Moodle is not considering the impact of reopened attempts as part of its completion workflow. It should ignore reopened attempts and not  mark course as complete until all the attempts are exhausted or all activities set receive a passing grade.

I'm having the same issue. After upgrading from 2.7 to 3.1.2 when setting course completion on completing an activity (like a quiz):

- when setting minimum grade in activity (quiz) and completion based only on "receiving a grade", the course is completed even if the student didn't pass the quiz. In 2.7 this didn't happen: course was considered completed only if minimum grade was met

- if you set activity completion on "require passing grade", course is completed only when student pass the quiz (as expected). But pass/fail icon doesnt' work correctly: no green tick (passed), no red cross (failed), but only blue tick (completed).

I think there is some inconsistency.

Hi, we found out the same issue by chance...Our courses worked fine in 2.8, now in 3.0 Course completion works differently.

We've just created the issue MDL-56453

Ciao!
