In this one-sided conversation (: the following was recommended through e-mail by Tim Hunt:
"To start with, try adding core_php_time_limit::raise(300); near the top of report/editdates/index.php (just after the require_once lines). See if that makes a difference."
This is now working in or out of Editing mode.
