Adding video

Adding video

I have tried to add a video to a webpage using the same method as adding a flash.swf file (adding a link and browsing for the movie file)

When i preview the webpage the Movie window appears, along with the playback controls, but my movie wont play.

I have turned on the multimedia plug-in filter..so i dont think that is the problem, and i have tried using .wmv and .avi files, but still no luck (although ive not tried .mov yet)

My flash.swf files work though..........so no problems there

Has anyone got any suggestions? Ive searched through the forums for 'video' topics but was unable to find an answer.....even if someone could just point me to a 'link' that could help, it would be very appreciated.....

Thanks....in advance

first big question. What kind of video is it? Mov, avi, mpg, etc?

What player is it trying to open?

hi julian

thanks for your reply

ive tried .avi and .wmv files (i mentioned this, or do you mean where i created the files....apologies if you do, i mean no disrespect)

moodle displays a mini windows media player (sometimes) but refuses to play the movie (and the play button is unlit), however the first time i accessed the webpage i created the movie in, the movie player had a different 'skin', so this is a tad confusing too..

ps.i am not trying to stream a movie...just play one, and its only 3mb in size

hi julian

ive got it working with a quicktime . mov file that was 514kb in size, so maybe it was the file size that was a problem...

Do you know if there is a maximum file size that is recommended?

Thanks again for your reply.

Re: Adding video

Hi,

I have successfully linked to .wmv video files as large as 13MB smile

What i do is simply compose a web page using the html editor in moodle and assign a web link to a selection of text (usually the title of the video) and when that page is accessed the windows player appears underneath the text link. The text link can still be used if the person wants to download the video via right click.

Displaying a video this way is streaming and you may need to wait a few moments for the video to buffer before it you can play it.

I hope this helps big grin

Re: Adding video

At our college we found streaming wmv's to be limiting (becasue we do have some macs) and also bandwidth hungry.

If this is an option for you, try converting your files into flv (flash video) format. A new function has been recently added to the mediaplugin filter to allow for the embedded streaming of these files.

The advantes here are; a) the files are alot smaller and b) will happily play on any type of browser or OS.

A free FLV encoder is available called Riva and is available from here. It can encode from avi, mov, mpeg and wmv files.

I have converted a number of videos to flash using Swishvideo. I find this a particuarly useful tool as it provides player controls as well.

I have found that the file sizes are not always smaller than .wmv and in a lot of cases larger. Compatability is not to much of an issue for me as we all run Windows machines.

Yes, flv (flash video) is a fantastic new way of delivering video. Is everyone aware that flv files are now recognised by the media filter of moodle and is automatically placed into a flash player (similar to how mp3s are played).

It seams not many know this. A great feature.

It is a great feature. I wish i could make it work right. I can't keep it from autoplaying every time no matter what. see this thread:

Re: Adding video, NOT. Flash 8 vs. Flash 7 or 6

de către Mark Schultz-
I've been trying for almost a month to get the wonderful new flash player to work without autoplaying every time. I even tried loading the FLA file into flash 8, adding an autoplay=false and recreating the SWF. Lo and behold, flash didn't want to do that. It said that the file must be converted to a version 8 flash to use autoplay.

Does anyone know if this is correct, am I on the right track here?  I'm having trouble imagining that the Moodle team would release a filter that always autoplays. Has anybody been able to play FLV videos without it autoplaying all the time?

The filter code was released by myslef and currently only autoplays. The player was written by a third party developer under his own license that he has been willing enough to share with us.

I will see if we can add a varaible to disable autoplay.

Hi Julian,

I'm at decision time for my Moodle install and would love to use flash for video streaming, but it's unusable for me with autoplay always on.

Any luck with editing the filter?

 I've tried editing with Flash 8 and haven't found a way to disable Autoplay without breaking the filter.

Re: Adding video/Firefox Problems

de către Rob Johnson-
I cannot get avi's and wmv's to play in Firefox.  I have tried several machines with both FF 1.0.7 and FF 1.5.  The Windows Media plugin is installed.  Sometimes I get a message saying that the plugin has crashed, and sometimes I can see the player, but get no video.  These videos will play using IE.  I have had no luck with.flv files in either browser.  I encode the video with riva and get a player, but nothing plays.

Has anyone been successful viewing videos using Firefox?

I have run into the same problem. I cannot get .wmv files to play in Firefox. Using Camtasia, I produced them as Flash .swf files and they play perfectly in both IE and Firefox. The only drawback is that the .swf files are much larger than the .wmv files. Has anyone solved the problem of viewing .wmv files in Firefox (which I much prefer)?

It is more than .wmv.  FF cannot play .mpg and .avi. either.  This includes the Moodle 1.7 Beta that was just released.  A screenshot of the FF error message is here.

I don't have a problem in playing this in either IE or Firefox....except....

it inserts windows media player placeholders which are acceptable in FF but unacceptably huge in IE.   Any ideas, please

Re: Adding video/Firefox Problems

de către Don McCunn-
The weirdness continues. I have someone using Firefox to view .wmv files with no problem. I haven't been able to make it work on my Firefox--except on rare occasions.

I'm providing a link to the video files in a class folder. I am not trying to embed as I have up to 6 videos per page offering both broadband and dialup versions. So when the filter for .wmv is on, the page takes forever to load with all those blank black boxes looking out. So the link is my solution.

But as I can't get the links to work for me except on IE, I include a Moodle Directory function so people can go directly to the files in the Moodledata folder. So with Firefox, if you click on the link for a video, same error message. But you can right click and download the video to your computer. No problem.

My point is that if it works with one Firefox browser and not another, there must be a software switch somewhere that needs to be set just right to allow .wmv to work on one computer but not another.

The BIG question is what is that switch and where is it located? Does anyone have any ideas?

Re: Adding video/Firefox Problems

There seems to be something around the use of files within Moodle:

Here's how I came across the problem you have.

Code used (within the page):

<object type="application/x-mplayer2" height="240" hspace="10" width="320">
<param name="FileName" value="http:www.myWebsite.com/files/myVideo.wmv" />
<param name="AutoStart" value="0" />
<param name="showstatusbar" value="1" />
</object>

As a matter of fact, and whether you use .wmv or .mpg files, the video seems to play in FF if the media come from an external website, not Moodle files. IE will accept it in any case.

I haven't tried with flash files yet. Hope it helps...

Re: Adding video/Firefox Problems

de către Rorschach Vision-
Yes, I'm pretty certain the problem is because the /moodledata folder is hidden (for security reasons) from browsers. Media needs to be streamed through 'moodle's php layer' before it hits the media-player.

The media player act like another browser window and won't keep the session authentication info, therefore it can't access the file directly.

This is why you can download from outside the /moodledata ; eg. /public_html (if that's what you base directory is on the web server).

I'm not sure how the media-plugin gets round this, but it's obviously not optimized for firefox.

I am having similar problems to these....

I have teachers who have flipcams that produce video in .avi format. They need to be able to upload their video to their courses and link to them as a resource. The .avi will not play when you click on the file name from the Files menu in the administration block. It just displays a blank screen. It also displays a blank screen when you create a resource link to the video. (I set it to open in the same window and in a new window and it was still blank)

The entire school uses Mac computers, so I am testing on OS X using firefox 3.0 and 3.5.

.wmv files will not play with either method, but it does display a media player when I link to it as a resource.

I have not found any help with similar problems on OS X.

Re: Adding video

I just spent the weekend downloading and adding Videos to Moodle. I found a VERY easy way to download and convert in one or two clicks. Install Firefox as your browser and download the plug "Video Download Helper" https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006.

When you find a video you want from YouTube or elsewhere on the net, then a little icon pops up next to the URL and spins. All you have to do is click the drop down from the icon and select Download to FLV. Other download options are available. So in one or two clicks, I have my video downloaded AND converted.

Then it is just a matter of linking to the video file as others have stated on this forum.

A simple Link to File is the easiest. But if you want to resize it, the ?d=900x500 mentioned above works like a charm and is my favorite. I found if you go too large, it doesn't seem to work.

The most simple way that I have found to embed most videos into a Moodle page is to use a simple embed tag. For example, add the code "<embed src="video.wmv">" in html view. You can also externally link if you need more options. I would be nice to have a more novice-friendly approach like Bb does.
