for some reason I am not doing well with the header of the theme. It always seems to be magnified and cropped. So... what size header is recommended for Pioneer. I cannot find any clear indication.

It has the custom CSS you can drop in the theme admin and control the size of the top header area.
Thank you so much Chris. I will look. I take it that the additional CSS is preserved throughout the updating of Pioneer so I would not have to constantly change the CSS every time an update occurs.

Correct. The custom CSS is stored in the database and should not need updating. However, you should keep a text file of any additional CSS you use in case of disaster.
Then it is a simple copy paste if lost.
