I suggest that while you are investigating this problem, you change cron so that the logs are saved, not sent to /dev/null.
You may also need to add extra logging to the code the changes files in the file pool.
I have never heard of anyone else with a problem like this, so it would be really helpful if you could investigate more, and let us know what you find.
