Is there a feature within the quiz module which restricts a student's access to a quiz after "x" number of failed attempts?

The issue is some students will repeatedly take a quiz until they get a passing score.  I'd like to have them stopped after 3 and maybe send/display a message indicating "maximum number of attempts reached.  Go back to the material and review.  Quiz will be available in 48 hours." 

Or capability like that.

I know what you mean since I use unlimited attempts on some of my quizzes.

If you want them to think and study, give them only three attempts.  Period.

Or, tell Moodle to reward them with the average of their attempts, not the highest.

Just giving them a cooling off period won't really help.
