The simplest way to put fields side by side is with a table. Most don't like tables for some good reasons and use instead complex structures fo divs.
The field overflow seems to be a theme issue. This does not seem to happen in a standard theme. In any event, you should be able to control the size of file manager fields and editor fields by enclosing them with divs and setting the width of those divs in the css.
