a quick note to say, am I right in thinking the Learn Moodle MOOC is running next, in January 2016? Looking forward to it.

Hello! You're not quite right, as the MOOC runs twice a year and the next one begins on August 9th - please see the site for up to date details: learn.moodle.net
We will however also be running again in the New Year 2O16 as you said.

so it is not running in August, is that right? Moodle.net is not the Learn Moodle site...or am I seeing stars?

MOOC is an event which is held twice in each year and the next cycle is starting from August 09, 2015. The same MOOC will be conducted 2 times in 2016 also, you can join whenever it is suitable for you.
http://moodle.net and https://learn.moodle.net/ are two different sites from Moodle HQ, moodle.net is for sharing OER like courses, quizzes, database etc whereas Learn.moodle.net is the site where the MOOC is hosted.
In order to access the MOOC you need to visit the site learn.moodle.net
