Yes, it has been asked a few times here and in the plugin's page, although I try to just maintain the code I created https://github.com/dmonllao/moodle-mod_journal/issues/16 and I will add this feature soon, this is basically what needs to be done: https://docs.moodle.org/dev/Using_the_File_API_in_Moodle_forms#editor. Most of moodle's editors have their own file area and mod_journal should have it too.
