I just figured out my problem. I made a temp admin account and allowed a tech support rep from my hosting service to login using it and check my settings. (trusting but they are very service oriented and I watched where he went smile

Anyway, the only thing he changed was to leave the smtp host line blank. I thought I tried that but maybe not?? Everything works now. This probably is not a solution for everyone but....
