We have a Moodle 2.5 site that allows users to self register. On the registration page, we have added some custom fields. Some of the fields are required, and some are not. When the registration page is accessed by a new users, the required and not required fields are shown appropriately. Required fields are indicated with a red asterisk and are enforced if the user tries to skip them in the registration process. However, if we log into the site and then go to the registration page, the new custom fields do not show the red asterisk and are not enforced as required fields. The default fields behave properly as expected. 

While this is an somewhat unlikely scenario, it creates a scenario where a user can register without providing the information we required. 

Is there a solution to this problem?
