I FINALLY got my site up and running, so a bit thank you to all the people who so patiently helped me with all my questions, especially Bill Burgos, Tim Takemoto, Mitsuhiro Yoshida and Hiroto Kagotani. Thanks! It has been a lot of hard work (even though it may not look like it!). The content itself took a staggeringly long time to write. I went for a very standard-looking moodle site in the end, because, well, it works. I also considered having some kind of "flash" opening page with simple choices in blocks but decided that it took away more than it added. I was quite pleased with how "how it works" looked in the end though. Take-up has been pretty slow though and I am having to think of lots of new ways to market the courses pretty quickly!

Perhaps, you need to give more away in your demonstration courses to convince people of the need to enrol in the fee paying courses, unless of course you are marketing the courses offline, which you probably are.
But all the same, you might consider sprinkling
A forum or five that students could post to
An avatar of your glossary
A chat room (even if you are never there)
More resources at least as links
Perhaps some images (but perhaps not as many as on this course, which I designed)
Some translation machines or online dictionaries (see my http://www.nihonbunka.com/eigodaigaku/en)

You must have been reading my mind as I had been thinking pretty much along the same lines. Making the actual content was such a huge effort that by the time I got to sorting out the site I was pretty exhausted. I am going to put resources in, probably in the form of a glossary so that students can also suggest links etc. There are already a couple of forums and a chat room on it,so I don't want to overdo that too much. I like the talking head on your site and may also put that on at some stage. Images might also brighten things up a bit, as long as they are not of me!

PS What is your new text book about?
Great minds think alike.
I sell talking heads for 5000 a year. Or at least I have sold one.
The textbook is basically the same subject -- student life -- but the level is a little easier, and it is not limited to Yamaguchi University student life. It will be open source, I think.
