Slow Moving School

Hello anyone, if anyone can help with this.  We launch our school in July 2005.  Since then, we had over 300 people who registered and signed up for classes.  But, a lot of then were erased because of the 30 days setting of inactivity.  So right now, we have over 250 students in our school now.

We have a dedicated server on http://www.ymp.net/, in fact, the name of the nameserver is NS1.YMP.NET.  Most of the sites are using either Mambo, XOOPS, or OSCommerce, then some of them are simply plain HTML.  I need someones help with Moodle.  All of the sites that uses HTML, NO PROBLEMS what so ever.  All sites not running Moodle, using MySQL and PHP, running a little slow, but tolerable.

Two sites on the server, http://www.wise-path.org/ (XOOPS) and http://www.dragonsdvd.com/ (Mambo) are the heaviest loads on the server with over 1GB transfers per month.  http://www.wise-learning.org/ is theeeee heaviest load on the server at 1.5GB per month.  For some reason, wise-learning.org is running very slow.

Our server stats:

Since our site is running so slowing, we have tried everything from increasing the RAM from 512MB to 1GB, we tried selecting the amount of session login time to 30 minutes, and 30 days for inactivity.  Still the site is running slower.  Our server host says that there is a lot of non-activity requests to our MySQL server on the site, specifically to this site.  Can someone who is server knowlegdable can help me with this issue?

Here is one thing though.  Since we switch the dbsession (where instead of using flatfiles to store sessions, it uses the database), our site has been going a lot faster.  But we just tried it tonight.  We are going to try this setting for a few days to see how it performs.  But, if someone can tell us who is experienced if this was the problem and that using the dbsessions=enable is the best way, then we will keep it.

We are considering upgrading our server from 1.4GB Celeron to 2.4GB Pentium 4 with 120GB of hard disk.  Our host is asking us to do this and I am seriously considering it.  Do you guys think it is the server that is being overloaded (keeping in mind that the other HTML, PHP/MySQL and PHP only sites has no problems with so ever) or do you think it is something else.

We do think though that maybe there is a setting in the school somewhere, like a purge old data function that can clean the database of old files after "say" three months or so.  Please any advice will be appreciated.

WARNING-Don't go to the site antonioedward.net. I tried clicking on it and got a lot of warnings about untrusted security certificates, ip problems, etc., and couldn't get away from the site and had to kill my browser through the program manager to get away from it.

And Antonio, what gives you the right to call yourself God???

Mr N Hansen, I did not come here to this forum to get slammed because of the certificates on the site.  I am sorry that you had problems with antonioedward.net.  The untrusted security problems does not happen with my computer because I did install the certificates on my firefox browser already.  Using I.E., I saw what you were talking about.  What I did forget to do was install the secured certificates from godaddy.com onto dragonsdvd.com and antonioedward.net, and wise-learning.org will also have the certificates installed.

Secondly, about my name:  Allah is the last name of my father who converted to Muslim before I was born.  The family name before that was Edward-Lowry.  For many years, even when I toured in Iraq with the Army at Baghdad International Airport in 2003-2004, I was critized about my last name.  I am sorry you have a problem with it.  With the nametag ALLAH on my right chest of my Army uniform, it has not been easy.  Even a Muslim chaplain confronted me about my last name.  I had to set him straight saying that if he had a problem, to call my father and ask him why he changed his name.  I was named that and it is on my birth certificate.  I do have one year and a half to go on my enlistment.  Afterwards, I will change my name back to the family name, Edward, because I am sick and tired of having this name.  I just wish everyone understood that I had nothing to do with calling myself "GOD".

Last but not least, I did not come on here to get critique about my site, I did not come on here to get slammed for my name.  I came on this site to get ligitamate answers about how to make my wife's school run better.  You sir/ma'am had no right to come on this forum and blast me on my name and web site like that.  If you had a problem, you could have E-mailed me anytime and asked me about my name and told me about the certificate problem.  I am not a spammer, I am legit and have been doing web design since 1995 (the day the Internet went public, released by D.O.D.)

UPDATE about my wife's Moodle site:  Under configuration, variables, we switched dbsessions from disabled to enabled and it works fine.  No problems what so ever on the server.  That was the problem all along.  I still, though, will appreciate any comments about my wife's site http://www.wise-learning.org/ to help it run faster and better based on my specifications of the server I posted above.  Thank you.

I'm sorry about the trouble you had in Iraq. I'm Musllim myself and lived in Egypt seven years and I know no Muslim has the name "Allah," because that simply isn't a name by itself. They might have a name like Abdallah or Menatallah but this sounds like your father's name was split up by some ignorant American bureaucrat somewhere down the line and you are bearing the brunt of this stupid mistake. And it shows you how ignorant some people in our military are if no one had the foresight to see this as a problem for you before they sent you over there.

As for the certificate problem, I had it in Firefox. It just made me think there was something wrong with the site because it wasn't just one certificate, but multiple ones popping up, and even when I said that I didn't want to continue loading the site they kept coming and froze my entire browser.

Thank you.  I need to get certificates from godaddy.com for dragonsdvd.com, ymp.net and wise-learning.org.  They are $29.00 per domain.  I just think that they are better than having a domain with usernames/passwords and private information being used on the sites.  But until then, the sites will continue to have a problem.  When I get back home from Fort Eustis, VA (training on the Apache AH-64D Longbow attack helicopters), I will download these certificates and upload them to my server.  Until then, the certificates that are assigned by Plesk SW-SOFT will just have to do.

About my wife's Moodle site, anyone who has a lot of students, like 200 or more, may want to go to configuration and switch the dbsession to enabled.  This way, it is not using flatfiles on the server, instead, using the database which seems to work a lot better.  So this was a problem before when disabled, now it is not.

About my name, it is all good.  EDWARD will be my future name and no, the Army did not forsee any problems for me.  Oh well.  Me and my wife, Serenity, are looking forward to using our new last name.  Thank you for the reply.
