GD Issues

GD Issues

I am considering migrating to a hosting company that runs on IIS 5.0 with php and MySql.  However, the server does not have GD installed.  What repercussions does absence of GD have on the performance of Moodle?

  1. Will all formats of images work like png. etc.
  2. Will TEX fileter work.
  3. Will user profile images work.
  4. Any other point.

Also, are there any additional points I need to consider before going for IIS 5.0.

The features that rely on GD won't work, such as user profile pictures (they won't be able to change them), activity graphs, etc.

Why would you want to move to a hosting company that doesn't meet Moodle's minimum system requirements? I'd suggest choosing a hosting company based on criteria (like reliability, support, uptime, MB/$, bandwidth/$, etc.) other than the OS used, myself.

However, there are plenty of hosting cos that run IIS and  have PHP installed with a standard configuration (which includes GD), I'd suggest choosing one of the them.

Dear Michael,

The Moodle documentation lists the following as the requirements which this host meets:

  1. Web server software. Most people use Apache, but Moodle should work fine under any web server that supports PHP, such as IIS on Windows platforms.
  2. PHP scripting language (version 4.1.0 or later). PHP 5 is supported as of Moodle 1.4.
  3. a working database server: MySQL or PostgreSQL are completely supported and recommended for use with Moodle.

The reason for my considering change in web host is mainy reliability, uptime, server space limit, data transfer limit, speed and expenses.

However, they do not have GD installed on their server.  Hence, I need to know in details what effect can this have on my site.

Manish.
