We have developed a custom resource type (Add an NLN material) and would like to develop an easy installation for other users. Our custom resource type requires new database tables to be created.

Which of the following approaches would be preferable:

  1. Include the custom resource type as a part of the resource module in mod/resource/type and write an installing script for it.
  2. Make the custom resource type into a module in order to use the module installing script. Then make the custom resource type appear in the "Add a resource" drop-down menu in the same way as the label does.

If 2. is the preferred approach, then any pointers to how the label appears as a resource, rather than as an activity would be appreciated - thanks! smile

Personally would think use the 'activity' module so it appears as an activity. Most of the NLN materials have tests so treat them like SCORM packages in the activty drop down. While they may be resources logically they are also tests, glossarys etc. thoughtful

Good job so far on the demo site so far approve, keep up the good work.

Thanks Rico, it seems that making "Add an NLN material" into an activity module is the way to go. In addition to being able to make use of the module installing script, it's easier to integrate it into Moodle generally. smile

We now need to come up with a good name for the activity module, preferably one word in length, and not "NLN material", as this term means nothing to students. Any ideas?
