I understood that the Journal module would go away unless I added the
$CFG->noconvertjournals = true;
line in config.php. Perhaps I missunderstood?
I've double checked our config.php file, and no such property is defined. However, all the Journals in the old courses are still Journals, and Journals are still available in the "add activity dropdown" for both old and new courses.
What have I done wrong? Can I fix this without re-upgrading (rather not have to, although we have only upgraded our test site so far)?
thanks

Yes, that's very odd. I've upgraded lots of sites now along similar paths and Journals are being converted OK, so I'm not sure what could be happening there.

Well, we just had the same problem : upgraded from 1.4.3 to 1.5.2 (not 1.5.2+) and journals were NOT converted. So unless I enable the "Journal" module in administration, they are not displayed in the courses. But then, teachers will still be able to create new journals, which we don't want.
Any way to manually convert journals to the equivalent type of assignment ?

Yeh - me too, but I didn't think too much about it (yet). I know this doesn't help from a diagnostic point of view, but it does look like there might be an issue.

One staff member at my school had journal assignments from 1.4 and they were converted to an online text - assignment fine.
The "online text" assignment replaces the journal, correct?

Hi all,
Our journals did not update to assignments either, but we never saw it as a problem, we rather thought that schools were left the option to do away with the journals or not. We have quite a few teachers who like the journal more (in the study diary function) than the messenger tool or the on-line text assignment.
If I were a PHP wizz, I would write a contrib. module blending the diary functionality, easy overview and gradability of the journal tool and the dialogue tool together, replacing the latter two that still seem to have a following .
Rgrds,
Paul.
