We have a case where we are unable to restore one particular course without losing all of the gradebook categories. It wouldn't be such a big deal, but there are MANY categories and subcategories in this course and recreating them would be a big pain.
I've searched around and it doesn't match some existing tracker items because those are all IMPORTING a course into an existing shell and I'm trying to restore from a backup file.

I do not know for sure if the problem is at the backup end or the restore end. I've tried many different versions of the backup, including those made in Moodle 2.2 and 2.4 (we are using 2.6). Is there a way that I can look into the mbz file and find out if the backup is including the categories and just not restoring them? Not that I know what I'd do with that information, but it could help troubleshoot the issue before I file a tracker item.
