Is there a way for text assignments to have a word count just like the discussion postings do?

If the text of an online text assignment is longer than 140 chars, it is shown as a word count which can be expanded to view the full text.
There are also plugins for the text editors in the plugins db that will let students check an accurate count of the words in the current text while it is being written.
