at the moodle.org forums!

Having links for previous and next post is a good improvement. Maybe it would be good to have them at the bottom of the thread, too.

For people who suscribe to threads, the suscription switch will be quite welcome!

Congrats! smile

But now, the "I want email copies..." option is enabled by default for new threads?

Oh, and for answers at new threads!

Hi Guillermo,

The discussion subscription feature is a new standard feature of Moodle 2.8 - first requested in 2004 - MDL-1626 (proof that if you vote and wait long enough, we eventually get there tongueout).

You can choose to subscribe to the thread when you post using the dropdown menu - which I believe defaults to subscribed so when you create or reply to a post - you'll be subscribed unless you choose no to.

There is also a little icon next to each thread to subscribe - some improvements are incoming for this interface in MDL-46215.

LOL big grin Yes, the team definitely gets there!

Yes, I know about the dropdown menu, but previously I didn't have to open it and select the "I don't want emails" option, as in my profile, at the Forum auto-subscribe directive, I have chosen the "No: don't automatically subscribe me to forums" option.

Yes, that was the first thing I noticed, that little icon, which can be a dot or a mail envelop!

The thinking had been that we would be able to remove this profile setting. The rationale, as I've explained in the issue, is that if you are taking a part in a discussion, then you almost certainly wish to be notified when someone responds.

The assumption was that this setting primarily existed because of the lack of per-discussion subscription.

The setting also defaults to 'no' if you have already posted in the discussion and have *not* chosen to subscribe.

Thoughts on a postcard please?

Many incorrect assumptions here.

I don't ever want email from moodle.org. I will come here when I want to read messages.

Therefore, i have turned off auto-subscribe in my profile, not because of some missing feature, but because I don't want email.

I suggest making the user profile option have three states. When I post to a forum:

  • Don't subscribe me
  • Subscribe me to that discussion
  • Subscribe me to the whole forum.

There is then the question of how you make that discoverable.

Ideally, it would be like new admin configuration settings. When an admin comes to the site, they are prompted to set any new settings.

Similarly, we could give a pop-up for users, asking them to chose the default. If we were really clever, we would to that contextually. E.g. the setting above related to posting in a forum, so when you go to post in a forum, if you don't have that setting set, then the forum subscribe option has no default (Choose ...) and becomes a required field. That sets the default.

Argh! No! Piss off you stupid system. It seems that I have to tell it I don't want to subscribe to discussions again and again, once for each forum or even for each discussion. This is getting increasingly annoying.

That isn't my pattern on these forums because:

  • I use read-tracking (and before that, I used to use RSS)
  • I am often dipping in where I see where I can add value, but if I then got every single email that stems from a  discussion it would be too much (same reason I have auto-watch switched off on the tracker). There are of course times when i'd want to switch it on because its a particularly interesting discussion. I imagine a lot of people helping out on the forums like 'Installation help' which are like this.

Actually I might switch to using email here with the introduction of the feature, but i'd still want the control - we already have the setting there for it.

Agreed!  I prefer opt-in, not opt-out.  My email inbox is already too full.

Like you, i prefer opt-in, and want to be able to subscribe only to some discussions i'm really interested in, or in some forums i'm not used to read often. And directly come to the forums to read all other messages.

Re: A new funcitonality...

Hello Andrew,

At the Tracker it was said that "moodle.org users are not typical Moodle users"; I'd say it is just the opposite. Anyway, maybe I'm not a typical Moodle user, but what I am is that I'm very picky about "automatic" processes, regardless of them being automatic email messages or automatic software updates or anything done automatically.

In my case, I have the Forum tracking option enabled and I regularly come here and check all the new threads from the forums I'm more interested to know about. I also use the Forum posts link under my profile menu to see about threads that may have been answered in forums seldom checked but in which at some moment I posted and that are within a self-defined time-to-live period.

Maybe this could be solved by just adding a Thread auto-subscribe directive at the user profile?

Just for the record, in my case the system has behaved as expected given the current definition, that is, once I have chosen the "I don't want email copies" option, either in a thread that I have started or in my first participation at an existing one, that setting has been respected and I haven't had the need to select it again.

Just to inform, given the current testing phase, that today I received a moodle.org forum digest eventhough I'm not suscribed to the General help forum, nor to any other forum, and I'm not suscribed, nor to the particular thread referenced at the message: "Re: Could not create guest user record" nor to any other.

This is your daily digest of new posts from the Moodle - Open-source learning platform | Moodle.org forums. To change your default forum email preferences, go to your user profile.

I'm sure it must have been a glitch after the current changes, but I thought it would better to mention it just in case someone else happens to see the same. Thanks!

It seems it is a particular glitch because today I got another email. I have just added the report to the Tracker.

Hello Dan, Andrew,

Thanks very much. It's working now; the "I don't want email copies of posts to this discussion" default option is back! smile Great! Yes

Ignore. Just testing. And thanks for the Forum improvements, developers. I can't wait for 2.8. (omg, a slogan?)
