All the graphics you can see around moodle.com and moodle.org were done by me - as you can see I'm not a professional graphic designer.

I'm starting to think about creating a more professional, slick look, and I'd like to use this discussion to gather some links, ideas and graphics (especially graphics!)

If anyone knows a graphic designer who can help out here it would be much appreciated, otherwise I may have to bite the bullet and hire someone (recommendations for great designers-for-hire are welcome too!).

Some things that need creating are
  • the main word Moodle, maybe with a nice object worked into it. This will be the basis of all other designs
  • the little "made with moodle" label
  • some banners in standard sizes
  • eventually, a simple style guide encompassing all elements of a page

Note, these are mostly for "official" Moodle sites, but may find their way into a new range of standard themes in Moodle 2.0. And if I end up using anything here commercially I promise I'll find some way to pay the designer!

By the way, this font is one of my favourites - it's a free font called Soul Papa (Windows TTF attached).

I am really keen to understand moodle infrastructure well to work on my moodle site.  For example I wish to understand the concept of how to change the logo and banners, how to make changes the front page of the Moodle site.  Also I wish to understand the overall strucutre of Moodle.  I am getting frustrated that all books and articles discuss how add resources, quizes, blogs, etc but not much on simplyfing tasks on the technical side of Moodle

The easiest (quickest) way to start learning how to change the logo/banner (assuming you mean the header image) is to start with the formal_white theme. There you will see logo.jpg (which is the header image on the homepage) and logo_small.jpg (the header image on all other pages/courses). You could just make new ones and replace them. Then look in the css files to change color, layout, fonts, etc. For example, this is the formal_white theme with a different logo.jpg and here on the same site is a different logo_small.jpg in a course.

You can also change a lot of what appears in the header and footer by editing header.html and footer.html in that theme. Just realize that if the css in that theme doesn't control something, then it defaults to what is defined in the standard theme.

psd files are normally Photoshop files...maybe they have started distributing the Photoshop source files with the theme.

I thought it might be fun to get some of the kids at school that use Moodle in their lessons to come up with some ideas for logos. I doubt you'd get anything of professional quality, but you may get some nice ideas that could be reworked by a "real" designer.

What do you think?

If nothing else, the story might make the educational press and publicise Moodle a little more.

Hi, Richard.

Personally, I think that it could be a great method !! Sure they have tons of fresh ideas for logos !! Then, reworking them by "professional hands" (or trying modifications by the rest of us) can result in some wonderful set of logos, banners and images for Moodle.

I have attached a zip of many different versions of the moodle logo---I can produce it in any font, color scheme, bevel, texture, etc---let me know if I'm on the right track.

Thanks, Rob ... I do like the rendered 3D look in general but it has to be pretty subtle to avoid that 90's feel. 眨眼 By the way, is that Cool3D you're using?

Among all this excellent graphic works, I prefer this one. I think moodle should point in this direction... IMHO, it will mix an educational "thing" (like the... what's the name of that hat in english?) and an electronic/modern/digital thing. Those things should represent  a good methaphor if what moodle is (just as John Captain's works).

I like the way this is going! Well done, Rob.

Yes, this concept with the mortar board hat on the m is excellent ... it is a pretty universal symbol of academia, I think, that highlights the person and not classroom tools like blackboards etc (In addition, I actually have one of those hats!).

I also like the FAT-looking letter shapes.

I'm not sure about the 1's and 0's unless they were really subtle ... they might look better if the Moodle letters were rendered in a sort of shiny glossy look (without looking exactly like Aqua 微笑 )...

My two cents: The hat is a bit displaced from the M (see its lower borders)... it would be great that the M "put its hat on" or... make it even more displaced and give it a sensation of movement...

I can imagine a GIF where the cord of the hat is moving left and right... once and again... 8)

I like the OSS for CL font... It looks great.. and although the 0's and 1's also look great.. that's one of the thing that people most fear of computers... They are hard to understand... almost magic... Only some "chosen" understood them... 微笑 It's not moodle... 微笑

I noticed that Moodle when written in Japanese is Muudoru, which when I pressed the "convert to Japanese characters" button on my Japanese system came out as "no-dollars" or "dollars-free," which is pronounced  "mudoru."  The "mu" is the mu of Zen Buddhism. It also means nirvahna or englistenment! Probably not appropriate but "no-bucks-education system" (mudoru kyouiku shisutemu) an easy way to remember the name.

I think "Use your Moodle" is a winning catchphrase so far. For those who may not be so familiar with English, "noodle" is slang for brain, so the phrase has a nice double-meaning. I also like the word "use" in there, as it implies active participation, rather than passive reception.

There should probably be different catchphrases in other languages. 微笑

Oh, sorry, I wasn't referring to this image, but to the ones with the hats (Red hat, see?). I thought a black hat ould be better (though it might be harder to make it look like a hat).

#FF9900 looks good, and is "websafe" too.

Instead of true black, what about a websafe dark grey? You can still show shading and contours with darker color or black, what other colors go with this orange/tan color?

Observing the sad fact that I am color-coordinating challenged, I am not a good source of color suggestion, (hence why I stick with shades of grey) but there could be some compatible colors that will catch the eye without distracting the learner (I put the logo on all pages in the courses with a simple modification... hope you don't mind.)

The logo (simple FF9900) with a little shadow, the hat (grey).

I think that it can be printed any size (and color) without problems. And the shadow can go out as necessary...

I guess that for people from the "anglo-saxon world" (at large) the mortar-board is seen as a universal icon of the concept of "teaching". For the rest of the world (including non-anglo-saxon European countries, etc.) it looks typically anglo-saxon, not universal at all.

Why not change the moodle logo to include just the moodle name (in orange) without the mortar-board or any other hat/symbol/etc. ?

.... I suppose one answer to this is that the current logo is established and instantly recognisable. One is unlikely to please all of the people all of the time. Tinkering with brand symbols can be risky.

Also, I'd have to reprint all my stationary, marketing materials and buy new exhibition signage. wink

Oh yes, I was not really advocating a drastic re-design of the Moodle logo as we know it. It does not bother me at all, and is quite familiar etc. I only wanted to point out that what is seen as universal by one part of mankind is seen as foreign by another part.wink

As a marketing guy, I would advise Martin not to change a thing about the Moodle image.  Good or bad, ugly, cute or beautiful;  the logo and the color scheme are now highly recognized in the education and software communities. 

If it turned out the mortar board was obscene in some culture maybe I'd lose it but other than that one does not F... with something like this while the usage curve is still pointing straight up.

The idea is not to eliminate the mortar-board of all the moodle logos or change the official logo of Moodle.
I just want to propose other M logos, with some part of all the countries of the Moodle world, we are a community.

i would like to question martin and you all about an idea i had for an advertising (it's more a wake up message for teachers at my faculty 微笑) campaign to make teachers more aware of moodle in the faculty.

my idea was to create some teasers using parts of moodle logo, like the "hat", the m with the hat and present moodle to the faculty community. it's a more "student gets teacher to use", and in fact we have been getting some acceptance through this way.

what do you think? is it possible?

Can you copy and paste your HTML code here?

Basically save the graphics in theme/<name_of_theme>/images then check your code is correct in both sections of theme/<name_of_theme>/header.html for example...

<img src="<?php echo $CFG->wwwroot.'/theme/'.current_theme() ?>/images/logo.jpg">
And that should do it (obviously including the sizes, titles, etc and checking the jpg is correct or should be gif).

Hi,

Following on from Helen Foster's keynote session on iMoot 2011 I was inspired to come up with two Moodle logo variations.

The idea came from the fact that Moodle is collabatory and the UK is hosting the olympics next year.

The font is 'Sawasdee' (free) from the Ubuntu operating system.

Second variation to follow.
