This happen with many plugin if I download one and I want to change it to the previously compatible one , moodle will shows error that I can't for example many themes
Can you please post screenshot of the screen to check what exactly happening at your site.

You can usually un-install and re-install the plugin.
I would ditto Damyon's suggestion in this regard, not that I am aware of or have experienced or seen a plug-in getting downgraded in moodle, only safest possible way is to uninstall and then re-install the older version.
This just works like a software application inside your computer, if you are trying to install an older version over a new already install, you'll get error that a new version is found installed in the system. (Exception occur like in case of Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite, that lets you install multiple versions at the same time)
