Some ideas about some stuff for Moodle.Net

Some ideas about some stuff for Moodle.Net

Hi,

I have only really got around to this now, apols been meaning to have good squint at Moodle.Net for some time. I really like it-great resource.  Some lovely stuff on there.

A number of suggestions then, if I may:

-The timer-thingy...might it be worth scrapping it!  I fail to see its purpose.

-Might a glossary/some sort of classification of the courses be useful? At the mo-tis like searching for a needle in a haystack... different age ranges, topics, some have learning objectives others don't...some have explanations about what is to come others don't and on....tis a real mish-mash.

-You know when peeps do the MCCCC, would it be an idea to ask them to design a best practice course/exemplar specifically for Moodle.Net?

-Is it worth mining the Teaching with Moodle MOOC and sending out a follow-up email seeking permission to use courses for Moodle.Net....to celebrate the great stuff on there...seems a shame those courses, and there are many, are just sitting in a database somewhere. I know the courses as they stand may need clearing of participant data-but the follow up email could ask for a fresh copy:

Email something like this:

Dear Colleague,

It seems so long ago since we particpated in the Teaching with Moodle MOOC, yet we would like to celebrate your course and creativity, by adding it to Moodle.Net.

Please could you let us know if there is any problem with this? Also, ideally we would like to have an empty course rather than the course that has particpant data within it. Therefore, if you have time, could you upload your back up copy to Moodle.Net or just let us have it and we will do the rest.

Kind regards

The A team 微笑

Or something like that anyway.

Cheers,

Dawn

Dawn- just to clarify something: are you talking about Moodle.net (which doesn't have a timer as it has no need for one) or School.demo.moodle.net (which does, as it is reset every hour)?

Hey Mary-a very sleepy good morning to you 微笑

I am glad you found my suggestions useful, it appears we are on the same page then-ACE!

Oh yes-clarification, important. Now then, I am a real stickler about functionality-and yes I think I ought to explain my notion of mish-mash.

Here goes. If you are not aware of this-then I am pleased because I am learning by explaining to you...win-win....kerching!!!!

So, on Moodle.Net, when you enter info for a search-in the search- frame (which am not keen on that design either actually) it tends to say no courses available....like I searched for Psychology, Research Methods and Photography.....my three separate searches...so three is generally a number I tend to stick with before I move on....I then moved on to have a look at 'all' of-the courses mode.

Lovely stuff....mish-mash though in as much as KS1...KS2....professional courses...secondary, HE courses came up....now when I clicked on a view demo-as a guest....for a course I liked the name of/blurb.....if it is a KS1/KS2 or for that age-range...then I was taken to guess where?

Yes-that is right, the Mount Orange site..........and the timer was there.....which made me speed up my thinking, my everything-felt a bit like Countdown the programme-if you know what I mean..he he.

Do you understand? or should I re-write....I am not sure if I have been clear/or you need further clarification-it is nice to engage with you, so please let me know.

cheers,

Dawn

Ah - think I am with you (and by the way I am on the train to London to get a plane to France  for family holiday -so if you don't get another answer soonish you will know why!) So you are searching Moodle.net and you occasionally come across a course which has a demo on Mt Orange School.demo.moodle.net -OK. Well first of all I agree about the search on Moodle.net and the whole interface in fact, and it is something the Sites team at HQ is working on to improve and revamp - which will hopefully encourage more people to donate courses- so watch this space!

When people donate courses to Moodle.net we like them wherever possible to have a demo site which people can access with guest access, to have a look at the course. It's not always possible but some people do this.

Mt Orange School.demo.moodle.net is  not linked to Moodle.net in any real way; it is a demonstration site with courses which you can edit as a teacher or work in as a student. It just so happens that some of the courses are considered useful enough for people to want to download and use in their own Moodles and so we have added them to Moodle.net and made the link to Mt Orange for people to see the course in action. In terms of age, the demo school Mt Orange caters for students (in our imaginary world!) from 8 to 18, although I'd say the better courses are for16+. The timer has to be on Mt Orange because people can only edit the courses with teacher , manager or student role for 60 mins before everything is wiped clean and they must start again. (It's the same with the sandbox, demo.moodle.net) It's proved to be a very popular reminder, and one I personally find useful.

To answer your point about LearnMoodle courses being added to Moodle.net, yes it is a good point but I do seem to remember we suggested this at the end of the month, if people had made good courses they wished to share, they might like to upload to Moodle.net. I think a few did but not many.

Reasons received with thanks.  I still think it is more than GUI-and would lose the timer/design of that-and I reiterate all my initial suggestions-great to know there will be movement on this.

Bon Voyage!
