Gamification: Weekly Team Scorecards!?

One of the most "on fire" gamifiers at my institution has been motivating students by turning his psychology class into a team-based game. He's finding that students work well for rewards, for each other (as members of "The Team"), and also enjoy their intellectual growth. 

BUT: He's been doing generating the team scorecards manually for each of his 10 class teams, each of which receives a score for "accomplishments" and "attributes." 
  • Accomplishments include 
    • winning the (Moodle-integrated) TurningPoint clicker quiz (scores stored in the Gradebook),
    • having the best class attendance (stored in the Gradebook). 
  • Attitudes include
    • mindset,
    • grit, 
    • knowledge (e.g., each team's Gradebook test scores are summed and added to this figure).
WANTED: Moodle-automated score keeping for such team-based gamification. We'd REALLY, really, Really like to see weekly scorecards automatically populated with up-to-date team scores. 

Much of the required data is in the gradebook. But I am not sure on a conceptual level how to use the data to auto-generate weekly team scorecards. The gradebook does not, by itself, seem like a good tool for aggregating such group scores. Does it? 

Nor do I know how to build this on a technological level. 

Hence, I turn to you, Oh Wise Moodle Community, both because of your knowledge and because of your celebration of progressive pedagogy.

I have spent a lot of time in the Moodle Gradebook  trying to coerce it into a gamification platform. I can offer a few tips:

  • Use the configurable reports plugin to generate a leaderboard based on criteria
  • Use custom scales (regular intervals) and letters (irregular intervals)
  • Use weighting to convert scores
  • Use exponential scores in the gradebook to level up  Level 1: 40 level 2: 80 Level 3: 160  level 4: 320 level 5: 640 TOTAL: 1240
  • Use a wiki and allow participants to rate each other  on specific aspects- scores go in the gradebook
  • Use the assignment module with group submission 
  • Use subcategories within the gradebook to aggregate results for each level - this forces scores to stay within the current level

I teach a few days a week and do Moodle admin/consultancy the other days so I have real students to test out my ideas on. The time involved in keeping scores is laborious and as much as a simple spreadsheet can do it, I am in search of making Moodle do this for me. Wherever I can get students to enter their own scores, or peer assess saves me entering and aggregating the results.

The release of Outcome sets in 2.8 (hopefully) will allow us more flexibility in matching activities to outcomes and grades.

Natalie, thank you so much! I am forwarding your snazzy guide to some colleagues, and we will pore over your suggestions here. 

It sounds like implementation of the functionality still requires a fair bit of technical know-how, plus significant imagination, as well. If we advance significantly on either, we'll report back.

There is an awesome spreadsheet leaderboard script which could be embedded in a Moodle Page - but I am intent on forcing Moodle to bend - It will take imagination and time.

It's good to connect with other's going down this road and share our breakthroughs. I have been talking  to Giridharan Dhanashaker, another Moodle Site Developer who has put alot of time and money into their design which they presented at the recent iMoot.
