a new idea Student Notification

a new idea Student Notification

Forgive me if this has already been suggested, I have had a quick look to see.

The idea

I would like to suggest that a user be able to decide how notifications from Moodle are sent to them. For example via twitter, Google+, Linkedin, email, Facebook or some other social solution that they are using. The message or notification of the message would be sent to their smartphone and then they get a Ping telling them that they have a message.

I believe that this would work best from their user account details where they can indicate their preference themselves and setup the connections. It would also be useful if it could be selected using the Uploading uploading users .csv.

The why

There is a problem that students generally do not use emails and so miss important messages and communications from their institutions and Moodle. Recently after performing a survey a number of students told me that they are sent email but no one tells them! Initially I thought well you can manage to breath without being told so surely you can manage check your emails.

I believe that this stems from a) students don't use email in their normal lives and b) many institution's email solutions are not easy for the student to sync their smart phones to.

I saw a demonstration of the Canvas VLE and they have this feature and I really like it.

Your comments please

Cheers

Stephen

Hi there. They can have their Moodle messages sent directly to their smart phones (or Jabber for example) if they choose (via Administration>Messaging) and if the admin has enabled it (Site administration /Plugins /Manage message outputs /Mobile Notifications) but I'm not quite sure what you mean by the others - do you mean it would be good if those options also included the option to message via twitter or Google+ etc, in addition? You're right  -emails seem to be so very out of date these days微笑

Hi Mary (it was good to see you at the Moodle Moot)

Yes Mary you are right although I haven't thought about using Mobile Notification. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who is using this.

Often when I have done some staff training I hear that Facebook is being to communicate with the learnesr because they do not use their email. It is so frustrating because they could be using Moodle so much more effectively. I am not suggesting that they should not use Facebook and in fact I think that if you don't have something like Mahara, Facebook is a good place for students to work together as a tutorial group.

Mind you if institutions used an email that was quick and easy for the students to sync to then the problem would be solved. They could just NFS their phone to a sicker on the wall (come on Apple get your act together!).

Hi Stephen,

I share your observation that many students check social networks more often than their email accounts. I have no clue how difficult it is for developers to give users more options beside popup messages or email notifications. Even in Moodle 2.7 in the default profile page, users cannot add their social network accounts.

Did you try out the Mobile app Push Notifications that are mentioned HERE

With kind regards,

Hartmut

Hi,

I really like this mobile push notification idea....seen the docs too.  One thing-I am not sure about...is there a charge for institutions to utilise the mobile ui/social network links of sorts via mobile too- in moodle.?

thanks for your time (anyone 微笑 Tis a question I have come across before.
