Just from personal observation, each version of Moodle over the past couple of years, has gotten a little faster. Moodle 2.7 is due for release this week and seems to be a bit quicker, so you might want to try it out. A lot depends on what add-ons, if any, you have installed, what the content of each "page" is, who you are logged in as, and where your Moodle is hosted.
If you routinely do everything while logged in with an admin account, just about every page will be much slower than it would be if you were logged in as a teacher or student. Different options within Moodle that can be turned on and off, can also affect page load speed.
If you are on shared hosting, performance can vary greatly, from moment to moment depending on the other sites being hosted on the same physical server.
