Unable to edit email on profile

Hello. I am trying to update (for example) xyz1user@email.com to user@email.com but I always get an error message: This email address is already registered.

There is no other profile with that email address and the user already has a number of completed courses so I don't think re-creating the profile is possible.

We are using Moodle 2.5.2 (Build 20131018). Thanks in advance!

Is it possible that another user with the email address was previously created then deleted?

I would check the database directly to see if the email is listed there as when a user is deleted through the moodle UI then the deleted flag is set in the database - the user is not removed.
