Thanks - this is very helpful.
Downloading different the packages isn't much of an issue - I think moodle is only about 15 meg zipped.
If there are a lot of changed files then I can see it would be laborious picking the files out but your idea of just replacing top level folders is great. I will look into the software you posted.
