We use v 2.6.1+.
According to this doc, it says "simply select it from the formatting drop down list which is found below the text entry area wherever you have the choice.".
But I am not able to find the formatting drop down. Where can I find it?

I checked Administrator -> plugin -> text editor and I could not find markdown.
How can I install markdown?

"By default, the Text editor is available for all text areas in Moodle and the format is automatically set to HTML format. However, if the setting 'When editing text' in Settings > My profile settings > Edit profile is set to 'Use standard web forms', then various format options are available in a dropdown menu below the text area"
In Moodle 2.6, it is called Text editor (in stead of When edting text) with the options (1) Default editor (2) Tiny MCE HTML editor (3) Plain text area. Choose the last one (Plain text area) to have the option available for Markdown underneath the editor window.
