Gradebook

  Well I know you can change the max points now in lib/weblib.php
  Now I don't know if that'd be all you have to alter, I assume you would still need to alter assignments/lib.php at least to actually add things, as I think the assignments module just references weblib for the info on the dropdown.  So any alteration would be done to the assignments module as it actually has its own info as to what is displayed. 
  Thats the gist I get, once again its me trying to help but some of this is me inferring from other modules I have used that the info is oulled from lib.php but I think I am right ;)
