Has anyone got any ideas or fixes as to why IE is so slow with version 1.5, it was good with version 1.4.x's but now with this great update its proverbably screwed! Mozilla of course humms along at full speed, but Internet explorer crawls when loading a page...
Lots of students will start complaining I can see so any ideas?

Moodle.org has seemed slow to me since it changed -- not on the home page, but on moving between forum threads and clearing the "unread" number in the Using Moodle course. I have wondered it this effect is caused by size/number of threads or number of forums I am subscribed to.
However, a course in which I had prototyped 2 topics that ran fine in 1.4.4 became very slow displaying the coure page after upgrading to 1.5 on my two test machines (WinXP 2.6 ghz and Win2k 800 mhz). Turning editing off largely solves the problem (but I am trying to edit), so does using Mozilla Firefox rather than IE6. Here are my course page display time results:
2.6 ghz IE6 800 mhz 2.6 ghz FFox 800 mhz
Turn Edit ON 23 secs 28 secs 2+ secs 7 secs
Turn Edit OFF 2 secs 5 secs 2- secs 6 secs
But I realized I had 26 topics defined, even if only two had content. So I changed to single-topic display and 23 / 28 seconds dropped to 4 / 6 seconds. I repeated this with a new empty course of 30 topics, with similar results.
I did not see this effect in 1.4.4, so should I report it as a bug? Meanwhile, it seems that when editing, use Firefox or use single-topic display with IE.
I have also noticed that the Workshop edit screen can take 4-7 seconds to display, but have not isolated the circumstances.

Actually I would like to go back on my statement , its not the theme as I thought, take out the logo from the cr theme and shes still grinding away. Also now got 40+ student complaints confirming this slowdown also with v1.5 using Internet explorer.... I wonder why it does it??
Tried with standard white, I was using cr aqua for v1.5 , but changing to standard white makes its just a little tiny bit faster, front page fine, but click on a course you can wait at least 3 seconds for the load, hit turn editing on, and it just took 20+seconds to load. The status bar gets stuck showing on a /pix.php/... file ( the file or .jpg it shows changed though everytime you turn it on... When you deselect turn editing on it loads the course page within 2 seconds, then stops and freezes the screen for up to 5 seconds, if you try and click on the screen you get the not repsonding message from IE and then it will come alive again and the page can be scrolled and used...

I think it might have something to do with this line in your course header:
<style type="text/css">/<![CDATA[/ body{behavior:url(http://demo.jaagroundschool.com/lib/csshover.htc);} /]]>/</style>
It looks like it isn't loading properly and hangs up the browser while waiting. It doesn't affect FireFox because behaviours aren't supported by it.

Yes it makes a big difference, and I must say: I prefer the static tabs above these disappearing tabs. (in IE when you hover over.)
On our 1.5 testserver I get this kind of messages at the bottom of the page:

Can someone explain me what it means?
For my part, what I saw on Moodle.org was slow, but seemed accounted for by large number of users. But when I upgraded my own standalone site to 1.5 and went to modify a 26-topic course, then I could plainly see a difference. I expect a lot of people similarly didn't realize it was a bug until they upgraded their own sites.

Hi, my-oh-my what a change! Has this quick fix been put in CVS, or do I need to edit the file myself?
Hmm.. just looked at the file -- the closest I see is this line:

Is that what I remove? Or did I get the wrong file?

Sorry changing pc's fixed the problem, dunno why. I jumped the gun without doing what I normally do and that is walk over and use another pc to verify a problem!
The fix works and 14 messages already received from students asking me to thank the person who figured it out !! 
They also think the message system is amazing too .
Worked for me... after I took out the line my site was 90% faster and my quiz timer worked just fine. We were almost ready to throw the computers out the window until I found this thread.
