Big problem - people can't log in after upgrade

Could anyone please help me?

I've gotten the following message from people using a site I've created

Michelle can't get in now and I can't and Laura Cernikova can't and all
three of us could before. So there's probably something we have in
common

This happened after upgrading the site to Moodle 1.5 Beta from Moodle 1.4.5.

I can't replicate the problem. _I_ can log in fine using their username and password
on my computer using both IE and Firefox. (I usually use Firefox).
Their security preferences and cookie selection are at medium (They claim.)

They claim not to be getting any error messages. The login screen just 'resets.'
after the bar at the bottom fills.
I'm not sure where to go next in the troubleshooting process. Seems like such an easy problem, but I'm stumped.

Has ANYONE else encountered anything similar?
Any insights?

I'm climbing walls here.

Thanks for any help,

Ryan

I just got another letter;

Everytime I go to the site
"shane" is in the user name box. I retype shane2 and it goes back to shane.

(note- I deleted and re-created one person's id in the hope it would solve the problem. It didn't)

I just got an email from Thom Parkison who also cannot get in despite
using the right conventions.

I have seen login screen being reset like you describe in FireFox if login failed. Explorer would display some error but FireFox would just reset the login screen.

I take it you are the administrator? The administrator can almost always log in (that's the idea) as that login bypasses a lot of the authentication possibilities. What authentication method are you using?

You're not using 1.5dev for a production site are you? surprise

Actually, I was. I wanted the RSS features and had trouble installing the module. Plus, I wanted to help troubleshoot and don't code so good. I also wanted to see if the system was ready to be installed on one of my production servers at work. So I upgraded a free forum I had set up for a friend in 1.4.5 to help me deal with some of the issues. (like certain themes not being supported.)

I'm using "manual authentication only."

I'm the site administrator, but I can log in using other people's usernames and passwords, even though they can't. I log out completly, and then log in as them. Which seems odd. I'd say that one or two people were just doing somthing wrong, but I got yet another letter today from a user saying "I can't log in. I could before." So while the conflict seems to stem from the user side of things, it's also widespread and not present in 1.4.5 ( or else only occurrs as the result of an upgrade. ) I'm really a bit baffled.

Perhaps I should ask what version of IE they're using. I know the first person, at least, is not using FireFox. I'd imagine most of them are not.

One of the more tech savvy of my users has been able to get in, but I don't know what they do differently.

We are having a similar problem - in fact we cannot even login as administrator

have tried the following from the FAQ

The most common cause for this is that your own computer (not your Moodle server) has a firewall that is stripping referrer information from the browser. Here are some instructions for fixing Norton firewall products.

(We are having this problem on the server itself, as well as other machines)

OR

The server admin can also fix this for everyone by editing the Moodle configuration page and changing the variable "secureforms" to "No".

(But we cant get in)

OR

Another possible cause of this problem is that sessions are not configured properly on the server. You can test this by calling the script http://yourserver/moodle/lib/session-test.php.

(Went to this page and set the sessions but did not solve the problem)

We have looked at SELinux issues and have turned AcceptPathInfo to ON

We are running Fedore Core 3 Moodle V1.4.5+

Nothing has worked

Any Suggestions

Cool. I'll try that out. But if that's your problem, couldn't you login at a local library or somthing?

Changing secure forms to "no" solved our problem.

Thanks a ton!

I wonder if secureforms should be set to default or a warning put up next to it.

Just a note; I'd posted RSS feeds on my page, but I had one user who couldn't click on the link and go to the site until after I removed secure forms. I think I was able to use the links, but can't recall. Just figured I'd post in case this was relevant to anyone.

Here is the step that i solve this problem :

1.) Rename the problem "moodle"  folder to "old_moodle"

2.) Create a new database in mysql call moodle_2

3.) Put the new moodle (1.45) folder into the WWW folder

4.) Make a new moodle and link the database to moodle_2 which u make in step 2 (just like create a new moodle)

5.) after finished the install , copy the "moodledata" folder which in "old_moodle" to the "moodle" folder [ but dont copy this three folders " cache , sessions and temp" ]

6.) Modify "config.php" which inside moodle folder and link the database from moodle_2 to *moodle* now (which is the database u use before)

Hope this can help u all smile
