Turnitin and Moodle Evaluation

Turnitin and Moodle Evaluation

Does anyone know if it is possible to restrict access to assignment submission in Turnitin via Moodle until an evaluation form has been completed?      We currently have an excellent evaluation response rate, but we are using paper submission and will not accept the assignment unless we have proof of evaluation completion.   We are trialling Turnitin at the moment and I am concerned that our evaluation levels will go down.     We are using 2.4.

You can use the Moodle Restrict Access feature. Create a grade item in the gradebook and call it Evaluation; it only needs to be worth 1 point. Next create the Turnitin assignment. In the Restrict Access area, set the Evaluation grade item as a grade condition and that they must achieve 100% on it. When a student submits a paper evaluation to you, go into the gradebook and give them 1 point in the Evaluation grade item. That would then open up the Turnitin assignment to them. If they don't get a grade for the evaluation, they won't be able to submit the Turnitin assignment.

Thanks Marty, that's really helpful.   is there any way to automate this process?

With all good wishes.

You can automate the process using conditional activities.

Completion Tracking must be enabled at site level, and activated at course level.

Add your Feedback activity then in the settings scroll down to 'Activity completion'.
For 'Completion tracking' choose 'Show activity as complete when conditions are met' then tick the two boxes for 'Student must view this activity to complete it' and 'View as completed if the feedback is submitted'.

Return to the course and add a Turnitin assignment. In the 'Restrict access' settings choose the name of your feedback activity in the 'Activity completion condition' section, and choose 'must be marked complete'.

In the 'Before activity can be accessed' section choose 'Show activity greyed-out, with restriction information'

Now when you return to the course you'll see what the students will see.

The Turnitin assignment will be greyed-out and won't be unlocked until the Feedback activity has been submitted.
