I read in the Text editor FAQ that the default spell engine, Google spell, is no longer supported by Google and will not work. Have you tried enabling a different spell engine?
The recommended thing to do is encourage people to use a browser spell check, but I guess it's easier to click on a button than do CTRL + Right Click.
